Ascott House and Gardens
Ascott House has undergone one of the most extensive renovations of all National Trust properties. Originally a farmhouse built in 1606, it was enlarged in 1874 by Architect George Devey, a pioneer of Old English vernacular revival, to form Ascott Cottage. It was shortly expanded further to form a large hunting lodge with extensive stables, kennels and other outbuildings, before further enlargement into today’s extensive Edwardian home.
- Hall: Hand-stencilled wallpaper and heavy brocade curtains. Windows look onto the terraced lawns and a stunning view over Aylesbury Vale. Artworks by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Stubbs and Hogarth.
- Dining Room: Trompe-l'oeil effect on the walls creating blue and white Dutch tiles. Large dining table and chairs. Windows overlooking the terrace.
- Common Room: Carved wooded mottoes beneath the ceiling. Comfortable room with piano and fireplace.
- Library: Light wood panelling, walls of beautifully bound books and comfortable furniture.
Formal and natural gardens of 30 acres surround the house with views across the Aylesbury Vale. We have herbaceous and formally laid out gardens, trees, sculptures, topiary and fountains by Thomas Waldo. The Lynn Garden is a modern installation, based on circles and the flow of life, with small hillocks and trees. A serene and quite place for filming.
